Why would a dentist or doctor recommend oral surgery?
What will happen during my oral surgery treatment?
Oral surgery can include teeth extractions, dental bone grafts, periodontal grafts, dental implants, and corrective jaw surgery. In most cases, anesthesia is available for all types of oral surgery. Most patients choose general anesthesia for simple procedures depending on their level of anxiety.
At any rate, you can choose to sleep during treatment and won’t feel any pain. And when you wake up it’s all behind you. You’ll be ready to focus on recovery. At Cornerstone Family Dental, our dedicated team strives to make every oral surgery procedure as comfortable as possible.
How to prepare for oral surgery?
Here are 10 preparation points:
1. Read your pre-op instructions thoroughly
This will include details about your anesthesia and how to prepare for it. It will also include any additional guidance for the specific procedure you will undergo.
2. Pick up your medication in advance
When heading to the hospital for a procedure, make sure to stop by the pharmacy beforehand to grab any needed medications.
3. Arrange a ride back ‘n forth
Don’t attempt to drive yourself after anesthesia. Ask a family member or friend to drive you to your appointment and pick you up afterward.
4. Visit your grocery store
You need healthy food and drinks to recover. In advance, make sure to purchase healthy drinks, such as water, tea, milk, or protein drinks. You should abstain from spicy and acidic foods and anything requiring a straw.
5. Make sure to fast
It is recommended that you do not eat or drink anything for at least eight hours before your surgery. If you need to take medication, sips of water are sufficient.
6. Bring the right clothes
Ensure you feel comfortable in what you wear that day. It should also come off easily. No, it doesn’t have to look fashionable, as long as you feel good in ’em.
7. Refrain from smoking and alcohol
It’s so obvious. But still we see people who think they can get away with it the day the have to undergo surgery. Don’t smoke or drink alcohol for at least 12 hours prior to your surgery, and for at least 24 hours after.
8. Be on time, even better – arrive early
20 minutes early is not a luxury. You will have time to complete any last-minute paperwork and ask any questions you may have.
9. Ensure you have a good night’s sleep
Ask your dentist if there are any sleeping positions they recommend to avoid placing pressure on your mouth before your procedure (if it is relevant to your case).
10. When you have any questions, now is the time to ask
Having questions about your procedure, your recovery, or even the risks and benefits? Do not hesitate to ask. We want our oral surgery patients to feel informed and confident about their oral surgery procedure.
What is my role when recovering from an oral surgery procedure?
- Drink plenty of fluids and eat healthy foods that will help your body heal as quickly as possible (think lean proteins, lots of veggies, fruits etc)
- Do not smoke or drink alcohol while recovering from an oral surgery procedure
- Take any medications prescribed by your doctor as directed
- Follow the instructions given by your doctor for taking care of your wound (keeping it clean and covered with a dressing)
- Sleep propped up on two pillows for at least one week after an oral surgery procedure
Most importantly, take the rest your mind and body needs to recover.
Does my Alberta dental insurance cover oral surgery?
If you have dental insurance and have been told that your oral surgery is necessary, contact your insurance company to find out if they will cover the cost of treatment. Often times dental insurance will cover a portion of the costs of treatment and require patients to pay up front for part of the cost and then be reimbursed by their insurance provider.
