What does sedation dentistry feel like?
The sedation dentistry procedure is designed to make you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. You will be given a mild sedative before your appointment that will help you to relax. The sedative will not impair your thinking or ability to communicate with the dentist or any other member of the dental team. It simply reduces your anxiety level and creates an overall feeling of calmness. You might feel a little bit ‘groggy’. But you won’t feel any stress or anxiety. Almost needless to say that results can vary depending on the type of sedation, how much sedation is actually needed, and the overall health condition of the patient.

How do I prepare myself for sedation dentistry?

If you have any questions or concerns at this time, be sure to bring them up as well. You will also want to avoid eating anything after midnight the night before your appointment and stop drinking fluids around two hours before your appointment time. We require that you have an empty stomach for the sedation to work, so no food 5/6 hrs before the procedure. This ensures that oral fluids do not enter the lungs during the procedure and cause complications. Please ensure that you arrange a ride back home. We strongly recommend not to drive after treatment.
Are there any risks attached to sedation dentistry?
In general, sedation dentistry is absolutely safe. Nevertheless, (as will ALL medical procedures that require anesthesia) there is always some risk.
Sedation can cause a decrease in cerebral metabolism, blood flow, and intracranial pressure. This may cause your blood pressure to slow down, which can also account for the dizziness, drowsiness and headache side effects.
